Born in 1920, Americo Vescovi lived at 99 Anderson Street
in Raritan. He attended Somerville High School. From competitive writing examinations he was appointed to The U.S. Naval Academy. Upon graduation in 1943, he was commissioned a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy - where he served with honors during World War II. He saw action at The Mariana Islands and Iwo Jima. |

After the war, he married a Raritan girl Mary Ferretti
who lived at 8 Third Street. His Navy career spanned 40 years, during which he received several honors and awards. In addition, he published numerous papers. He died in 2000. |

On February 23rd, 1945, from his ship, he could see the flag that was raised on Iwo Jima. This was the flag from the famous photograph by Joe Rosenthal. |
