Why are There Empty Seats When the Team is Undefeated?
During 1968 - 1971 The United States was fighting The Vietnam War. A war that was very un-popular at home especially with the younger generation.
While many people attended the football games, the attendence was not what it would be today. As this was an era where many had other concerns. It was only the Thanksgiving Day game between East and West that brought an overflow crowd of 5000 fans.

One student from the class summed it up "You could easily get a thousand people to attend a protest against the Vietnam War, but it was not so easy to get that many to attend a football game.

An article from 1971 Somerset Messenger Gazette summed it up:
Apparently winning has gotten to be such a way of life at East that the student body has become blase about the whole thing. "I can't really figure what the problem is, but we are not getting the support of the student body," laments Coach Greiner. "Our club is a good one ... but we are not alone, Westfield, who has a 31 game winning streak, indicates that they have the same problem of not much student enthusiam."
